Can custom foot orthotics cause knee pain?

No. Generally speaking, a properly made custom foot orthotic should not cause knee pain because the force traveling up into each knee is handled by the custom foot orthotic. However, when custom foot orthotics are not made to properly match each foot’s corrected arch-up shape and when not calibrated to flex, there’s no way to optimize foot function. In this case, the shock from each step as the foot hits the ground travels up into the knee – not good.

Over time this shock and stress from each step can cause knee pain. It’s a matter of wear-and-tear over time. Custom foot orthotics should not cause knee pain, but they’re not all made the same and some are simply cheap cushions unable to optimize foot function.
