Good News for Caffeine & Diabetics

Are you a diabetic who enjoys their morning fresh brew?

In 2017 researchers published some interesting research in the Journal of Applied Physiology.

Caffeine & Diabetic Nephropathy

Nephropathy: kidney damage.

No other studies show how powerful caffeine can be for the diabetic kidney!

Good News for Caffeine & Diabetics

In 2017 researchers note, “caffeine administration alone and/or combined with exercise results in an improvement of diabetic nephropathy…”

Improvement?!!!

Caffeine for damaged kidneys?!

But Wait, It Gets Better

According to researchers there’s also, “an increase in creatinine clearance and urinary Na excretion, a decrease in urinary protein excretion, and in renal morphological findings.”

That’s amazing!

Creatinine clearance: has to do with the kidneys’ ability to handle creatinine (not to be confused with the sports supplement creatine) and helps doctors estimate the rate of blood flow through each kidney.

-An increase in blood flow is a good sign-

Urinary Na excretion: evaluates tubular reabsorptive function & how well the kidney handles sodium (Na).

An increase in sodium regulation is a good sign-

Decrease in urinary protein excretion: damaged kidneys let protein escape.

-A decrease in protein excretion means a healthier kidney-

Renal morphology: kidney shape and structure evaluated under microscope.

-Decreased abnormal findings is good-

New to the idea of caffeine, diabetic, and not sure how to proceed?

Start with a low dose.

There are literally hundreds of blends and flavors of caffeinated tea or coffee to sample.

Track your intake, the date, and response*.

For example, 1 Lipton tea bag steeped for 2 minutes, 10/23/2017.

Felt fine, a little weak on taste.

For example, dark roast coffee – 2 tbsp., 10/24.

            Walked 1 mile, feeling fine.

For example, pomegranate tea blend – 2 tbsp. steeped for 5 minutes, 10/25.

Walked 2 miles, perhaps steep for only 2 minutes next time.

*Whatever it is, write it down so you can remember.

Reflect on your experience and adjust dosage accordingly.

Symptoms of too much caffeine (not a complete list): restlessness, flushed face, nervousness, difficulty sleeping, constantly going to the bathroom, upset stomach, diarrhea, muscle twitching, rapid heart rate…

If you ingest too much caffeine, drink a large glass of water, go for a long walk, and wait it out.

Caffeine will remain in your system for an average of 4 hours.

Be sure to track this response and use less next time.

On another note, Image what could happen with a properly adjusted daily dose of caffeine and a little exercise every day.

Life changing!
